Chicago. Slightly cheaper, has a vibrant theater community, bigger and more urban.

Or Austin. Notably cheaper, very hep, much-raved art scene, warmer year-round.

I hear Portland (Oregon) is a fun, artsy city. Great for young people. I don't have any personal experience with that, however.

Agreed. I felt really "at home" when I visited there and several people have told me that people who love Boston would also love Portland.

San Francisco, so you can be by me. Also, there are sea lions and parrots.

Chicago.
Because it might have Colliers come January. And yes, it is huge for theater, and the third largest media city, which means web sites galore that will need your help. Yours, and yours alone.

I would like to phrase my answer in the form of a choose your own adventure:

Do you want constant entertainment, or do you want to be less bitterly cold all the time?

You want constant entertainment: You move to New York City. You go broke!

You want to be less bitterly cold all the time: 1) you move to San Franscico. 2) You move to the South.

You move to San Fransisco: you feel out of place among the sunbleached athletic subspecies of humanity known as Californians and fail to adapt to the constant earthquakes and power outages. You retreat slightly east to Portland.

You move to the South. You are surrounded by southerners!

You go broke: You move to Austin because it's cheaper. You are surrounded by southerners!

You are surrounded by southerners: You have gone too far. You retreat to Washington, D.C. - the fake south full of other displaced northerners who are tired of winter and broken transportation systems.

[So I recommend Portland or D.C. I know nothing about Chicago, which has also been mentioned so far, other than the fact that it is even worse in the winter than Boston.]

The worse winter thing for Chicago is a myth. They're pretty much equal if you look at weather.com's daily temperature averages they are always within 5 or less degrees with it switching back and forth which one is warmer and which is cooler.

Snow averages are also the same.

What I heard specifically about Chicago winter is that they get bitter winter winds. While it may be the same temperature, it's going to feel a lot colder if you're getting bitchslapped by frozen wind.

RE SF: "Constant earthquakes and power outages." - Been here for over a year with neither occurring. Although Californians are most certainly a "sun-bleached athletic subspecies of humanity."

Outstanding and Hilarious!
